The Junior Photographers – The Shelter: National Photography Competition for Kids is now open for entries from children ages 5–18. Through their lenses, participants can showcase expressions of joy, unity, culture, and independence, telling powerful stories without words. It encourages children to observe their surroundings creatively and celebrate what freedom looks like around them.

Three winners will be selected in each of the four age groups, and all winning entries will be featured on the Junior Photographers Website.

Judging Criteria:

  • Effort & Intent: Does the photo reflect care, thoughtfulness, or planning? We recognize effort at every age level.
  • Technical Quality: Is the photo clear and well-composed? Are lighting, focus, and framing used effectively (based on age group)?
  • Emotional Impact: Does the photo tell a story or make the viewer feel something? Is there a strong mood or message?
  • Relevance to Theme: Does the photo clearly connect to this month’s theme?

Theme Description

“Snapshots of Freedom” is a celebration of independence seen through the unique perspectives of young photographers. This theme encourages participants to explore and capture what freedom looks like in everyday life—whether it is the joy of playing without fear, the pride of cultural traditions, the beauty of diversity, or simple moments of happiness and expression.

It invites children to observe their surroundings with curiosity and creativity, transforming ordinary scenes into powerful visual stories. Through their photographs, they can highlight how freedom is experienced in different ways—through nature, community, emotions, and personal expression.

The theme also inspires young minds to reflect on the deeper meaning of freedom beyond celebrations, showing how it connects people, nurtures individuality, and builds a sense of belonging. By capturing these moments, participants become storytellers who communicate ideas and emotions without words, reminding us that freedom is not just remembered, but lived and felt every day.
